Product Description
Danfoss EKC 414A1 Refrigeration Controller – Single Evaporator Control
The EKC 414A1 is a complete control unit designed to manage refrigeration systems equipped with an AKV electronic expansion valve. It replaces traditional thermostat and timer relay assemblies, providing precise control over all key functions of a refrigerated display case.
Controlled Components
The EKC 414A1 relay outputs manage:
- AKV electronic expansion valve (acts as both expansion valve and solenoid valve)
- Compressor
- Evaporator fan
- Defrost heaters
- Lighting
- Alarm
Operation and Configuration
The controller has no buttons on the front panel – once commissioned, it requires no manual intervention during normal operation. Settings can be configured in two ways:
- External display module – a plug-in panel with display and buttons; shows measured parameters, setpoints, fault codes, and four LED indicators for active functions (cooling, AKV valve supply, defrost, fan operation; alarm – three flashing LEDs).
- Remote data communication – when integrated into the ADAP-KOOL® network, settings can be monitored and adjusted from a PC, either on-site or from a remote service facility.
Key Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Temperature control | Based on signals from 1 or 2 air sensors; ON/OFF or modulating mode (modulating available in centralised systems only) |
| Defrost | Multiple cycles per day via internal clock or signal from a master unit; terminated by sensor S5 or time limit |
| Inject ON | Automatic AKV valve closure when the compressor is not running – protects the refrigeration circuit |
| Digital input (DI) | Configurable as: door alarm, defrost start, night mode, start/stop control, or defrost coordination (master/slave) |
| Auxiliary heaters | A relay (alarm, compressor, or lighting) can be reassigned to control rail heaters or other auxiliary heating elements |
| Remote display | Supports connection of an optional remote temperature display for end-customer visibility |
Superheat Control (AKV Valve)
Refrigerant supply to the evaporator is regulated based on signals from a pressure transmitter and temperature sensor S2. The controller continuously measures superheat and maintains it at a minimum level regardless of operating conditions. The AKV valve functions simultaneously as an expansion valve and a solenoid valve.
Clock Module (Optional)
For installations operating outside a data communication network, an optional clock module can be fitted directly into the controller (plug-in socket). It allows programming of up to 6 defrost cycles per day and includes a battery backup to retain settings during power outages.
Communication
The controller features a built-in LON RS 485 data communication module – no additional network card is required. It integrates seamlessly with ADAP-KOOL® system devices.
Designed for single-evaporator installations. Changing settings requires either an external display module or access via the data communication network.
