CASTEL 2028N/M10S02 expansion valve is a PWM (Pulse Width Modulating) solenoid valve from the 2028N series, part of the POLYHEDRA line. The valve is suitable for A1, A2L and A3 refrigerants (HFC, HFO, HFO/HFC blends and HC). Model M10S02 has a type 02 orifice with a diameter of Ø0.7 mm - the second of the nine orifices in the series (01-09) - and solder connections of Ø10 mm (inlet) and Ø12 mm (outlet).

The 2028N/M10S02 valve is used in refrigeration systems where the refrigerant flow to the evaporator is to be regulated by pulses from an electronic controller, for example in refrigerated display cases, freezers and ice cream machines. Is the valve supplied with a coil?

No. 2028N series valves are available only without a coil (S suffix). In its current Handbook, Castel provides data for valves fitted with 9360 series coils.

What connections does model M10S02 have?

Solder ODS connections: Ø10 mm inlet and Ø12 mm outlet. The version with imperial connections (⅜" inlet and ½" outlet) has the designation 3S instead of M10S in the part number.

Can the orifice in the 2028N/M10S02 valve be changed?

Yes. The orifices are replaceable and can also be installed after the valve has been soldered into the system. The last two digits of the part number (02) identify the factory-fitted orifice type; select the replacement kit using the table in the Castel catalogue.

How do I select the orifice size?

Determine the pressure drop across the valve (condensing pressure minus evaporation pressure and pressure losses in the liquid line, distributor and evaporator), adjust the evaporator capacity for subcooling, and allow for PWM control headroom (Castel gives 125% as an example for evaporation temperatures ≥ -15 °C and 150% below -15 °C). Then select an orifice with a capacity equal to or slightly greater than the calculated value.

What are the maximum pressure and temperature range?

PS is 50 bar, and the refrigerant temperature TS ranges from -40 to +100 °C.
