Product Description
Danfoss TD 1 Thermostatic Expansion Valve – R290 (068N5603 / 068N2019)
Danfoss TD 1 is a precision thermostatic expansion valve specially designed for use with the natural refrigerant R290 (propane). It regulates refrigerant injection into the evaporator based on outlet superheat, ensuring optimal heat exchanger surface utilization and high system energy efficiency. This is an OEM-class solution manufactured for refrigerated display cases, refrigeration cabinets and heat pumps operating on propane.
Key features and benefits
- Precise superheat control: the thermostatic diaphragm element with capillary reacts quickly to changes in evaporator outlet temperature, injecting refrigerant exactly as needed without energy loss.
- Steel sensing bulb with Danfoss patented clamp: the bulb strap ensures reliable thermal contact with the tube, reducing installation time and eliminating superheat measurement errors.
- Hermetic and compact construction: laser-welded thermal element, stainless steel capillary and sensor provide high resistance to pressure and vibrations in the refrigeration system.
- Flexible stainless steel capillary (0.75 m): tolerates tighter bends during installation, simplifying routing in cramped refrigeration furniture.
- Integrated inlet filter: protects the orifice from contaminants in the system, reducing the risk of clogging and service intervention.
- R290 certification: the valve has passed ignition source assessment according to EN ISO 80079-36, which is required for use with flammable propane – compliance with EU regulations without additional paperwork.
- Max operating pressure 34 bar: suitable safety margin for R290 systems, where condensing pressures are higher than with traditional synthetic refrigerants.

Application
The TD 1 068N5603 valve is intended for small hermetic refrigeration systems charged with propane R290:
- Refrigerated display cases with glass doors (GDM – Glass Door Merchandiser)
- Commercial refrigeration and freezer cabinets
- Small heat pumps with R290
- OEM equipment where high reliability and flammable refrigerant certification are required
Manufacturer documentation:
FAQ – most common questions
Is the 068N5603 valve suitable for refrigerants other than R290?
The 068N5603 code is factory-designed exclusively for R290. The TD 1 series also includes versions for R134a, R1234yf, R404A, R407C, R452A, R454C, R455A, R22 and R513A – each with a separate catalog number selected for the refrigerant's thermodynamic properties.
What is the difference between TD 1 and TDE 1?
TD 1 has internal equalization – suitable for evaporators without a liquid distributor. TDE 1 has external equalization and is used where the evaporator has a liquid distributor and there are greater refrigerant-side pressure losses.
How do I choose the correct orifice for the installation?
The orifice is selected based on the evaporator cooling demand under operating conditions (evaporation and condensing temperatures). For precise selection, Danfoss provides the free Coolselector®2 tool online at coolselectoronline.danfoss.com. This valve (orifice 0) covers up to 0.87 kW with R290.
How should the valve sensing bulb be mounted?
The sensing bulb should be placed on the evaporator outlet tube and fastened with a bulb strap (included with the kit or available separately as 068U3525 / 068U3520). The strap ensures tight thermal contact between the bulb and the tube, which is critical for accurate superheat control.
What is the maximum operating pressure of the valve?
The maximum operating pressure is 34 bar (500 psig), and the test pressure is 37.5 bar (540 psig). For R290, the MOP point in range N is 6.3 bar (te = 15 °C) or 7.4 bar (te = 20 °C).
Does the valve require ATEX certification to work with R290?
The TD 1 valve has passed ignition source assessment according to EN ISO 80079-36, which is required for equipment used with flammable R290 (A3 class). ATEX certification is not required for typical refrigeration applications, but this assessment confirms a safe design against ignition risk.
